Which Do You Like Better: Crochet or Knitting?

Posted by Caley on May 28th, 2009 at 10:53am

I generally crochet but I recently gave knitting a try. I’ll be honest: I much prefer the one hook and one stitch at a time as in crochet. I’m curious what are readers think. Do we have more knitters than crocheters? Which is better?

I like both but know more about crocheting then knitting so am slower at knitting

  • 2. Shirley Dilts  |  May 29th, 2009 at 8:31 pm

I love to crochet, it is so much easier. I can knit but it is more cumbersome. I think knitting can have more attractive stitches than crocheting. Knitting is for patient people.

  • 3. Barb Lyles  |  June 5th, 2009 at 7:11 am

I’ve been crocheting for over 50 years and just love it. I never could learn to knit, although I tried for years. Right now I am making many baby afghans for my grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and friends who are having new babies. I really love the reversible afghans, they are so beautiful, I wish there were more patterns for them.

  • 4. eileen eby  |  June 5th, 2009 at 7:16 am

I like both too, but even though I am a patient person, I find kitting to slow and I can crochet much easier and even do stitches without looking sometimes. The process of crocheting produces much more intricate designs. In my opinion this is important. Baby afghans are my favorite projects.

  • 5. Irene Moreno  |  June 5th, 2009 at 8:41 am

My favorite is crochet,I’m 57 I have been crocheting since I was 14. I knit mostly things that are rectangle or square thats as far as I go. I don’t knit much because it seems to take longer to finish.

  • 6. Nada Graf  |  June 5th, 2009 at 8:59 am

I love to knit and crochet and do both. Learn ed to knit at age 10 but started crocheting at 24 and and at 61 I usually have a project of both going at the same time. I always have 3 or 4 projects going at the same time.

  • 7. Gabby  |  June 5th, 2009 at 9:04 am

I personally started out with knitting and it took me a while to ‘get’ crochet but once I did – look out! I disagree that you can do more with knitting – there are thousands of stitches for crochet that are gorgeous (and hard!)
The one thing I find is that with knitting I can do other things easier like watch TV or read a book, crochet takes most of my attention.

  • 8. Cheryl  |  June 5th, 2009 at 9:07 am

I love crocheting much better and there are so many interesting stitches to choose from, there is just nothing better. I’ve been crocheting for 37 years now.

  • 9. Diane Wilson  |  June 5th, 2009 at 9:59 am

I both crochet and knit. I like crochet better because it works quicker and if I want to be leisurely then I will knit a project since knitting usually takes longer to make.

  • 10. sharron volner  |  June 5th, 2009 at 10:58 am

i prefer the crochet over the knitting its faster,

  • 11. charlotte gullo  |  June 5th, 2009 at 11:19 am

Thank you very much for asking us to vote on this subject. I have always wanted to learn how to knit however the yarn would never stay on the needles! Crocheting has been my favorite pass time since the age of 8 which makes 60 years.

  • 12. Carol  |  June 5th, 2009 at 1:16 pm

Crochet is faster and more forgiving. It is easier to rip out errors and redo them than with knitting. I like the way knitting drapes for wearables, but lately with the fine yarns and tunisian or tapestry crochet we are able to capture that drape. Crochet travels better, with one small stitch holder (a lever back earring or even a safety pin). Hooks are smaller than needles and can be steel, aluminum or plastic/lucite, requiring smaller cases that fit in a purse with ease. I think each technique has it’s uses, but I am a crocheter at heart.

  • 13. Gloeia Lowe  |  June 5th, 2009 at 2:26 pm

Love the appearance of knit but am just so slow at it that I perfer crocheting for me. Can make baby outfits so much faste and that is what I do enjoy doing for charity.

  • 14. Maryann  |  June 5th, 2009 at 2:51 pm

If the poll is correct then why aren’t there better clothing patterns for crochet?

  • 15. pat willis  |  June 5th, 2009 at 4:13 pm

i love to crochet best i crochet all the time

  • 16. Sharon Brown  |  June 5th, 2009 at 4:14 pm

Knitting is much softer and light, but crocheting seems to go faster. I do both, but more crocheting.

  • 17. Linda E. d'Hondt  |  June 5th, 2009 at 4:36 pm

I’ve been knitting since before I was 7-y-o and continue to love it. I’m fortunate in that I can teach myself new patterns/stitches by experimentation and reading. My crochetting is slow due to not doing it often.

  • 18. Betty Hansford  |  June 5th, 2009 at 4:52 pm

I much prefer crochet! I’ve tried knitting, and I was about as graceful and effective at that as I would be with tap dancing at my age and in my current physical condition. I have friends who knit and I’m often envious and think seriously (for about 60 seconds!) about giving knitting another try; but then reality whacks me on the head and a little voice in my mind ways “What ARE you thinking?” That’s the end of that for a while, at least until the next time.

  • 19. Barbara Gades  |  June 5th, 2009 at 5:06 pm

Crochet is my favorite, especially the afghan stitch and cro hook. I’ve made a number of afghans using both, the cro hook works really nice for baby afghans. The largest afghan I’ve made with a cro hook was for my niece’s wedding, it measured 76 X 88 when done.

  • 20. Melody Higham  |  June 5th, 2009 at 6:51 pm

I have been a crocheter forever and just learned to knit over a year ago but I prefer crocheting because i understand it. i agree 100% with Betty Hansford.

  • 21. Nan  |  June 5th, 2009 at 7:36 pm

I enjoy both… it depends on the project I want to make, and how time consuming it is. For blankets and afghans I prefer crochet.

  • 22. Dolores Powell  |  June 5th, 2009 at 8:15 pm

I love to crochet. So many interesting things to make. I have been crocheting since I was 5 and will be 82 in August. Enjoy your newsletters so much.

  • 23. Mary Boling  |  June 5th, 2009 at 8:19 pm

if making a sweater, knitting has a much softer feel than crochet. If you make pot holders, crochet is the way to go. A lot depends on what you are making.

  • 24. maria  |  June 5th, 2009 at 8:30 pm

i like crocheting better i tried knitting and could never get the hang of it-i agree one needle is easyer than two

  • 25. zenzele  |  June 5th, 2009 at 8:52 pm

crochet baby , for life its faster and I can focus on one hook not two but knitting has more patterns

  • 26. Eleanor Griego  |  June 5th, 2009 at 11:23 pm

I love crocheting best and I feel that ANYTHING you crochet is much prettier than knit things, more variety of designs (crochet stitches)and cooler looking patterns and projects when they are finished.

  • 27. Reba  |  June 6th, 2009 at 5:18 am

I have”nt mastered knitting yet so I love to crochet. Knitting is beautiful work of art but I just can”t seem to get anyone to teach the technique.

  • 28. Priscilla Laybolt  |  June 6th, 2009 at 12:01 pm

I like both , I do a lot of both , but can design more myself in knitting since I have been knitting for 78 years, and crocheting for only 55 years.

  • 29. Sherry  |  June 6th, 2009 at 4:15 pm

Crochet is faster and knitting gives me a cramp in the back of my neck!

  • 30. ANNIE JOHNSON  |  June 6th, 2009 at 5:06 pm

I LIKE TO CROCHET A LOT AND IS THERE ANY FREE PATTERNS FOR CROCHET FLOWERS. PLEASE SEND ME SOME TO MY ADDRESS. THANKS.

  • 31. Diane  |  June 6th, 2009 at 8:44 pm

I am much to impatient to knit…..with crochet I am able to see a pattern develop with each stitch, whereas with knitting, I am unable to see anything happening until I have completed several rows. Depending on pattern, I believe that one can make beautiful items from both!

  • 32. Karen Dalton  |  June 6th, 2009 at 8:47 pm

I was 60 years old when my mother taught me to crochet and I love it. I have made many afghans for family and friends. Sometimes I make my own design. Sometime I would love to learn to knit.

  • 33. beatrice adan  |  June 6th, 2009 at 9:38 pm

    crocheting is faster and easier.

  • 34. Lora  |  June 7th, 2009 at 2:12 am

I enjoy crocheting and do quite a bit of it, but I really like the way knitted items look. I prefer the smooth closed look that you get with knitting. I have just about talked my self into learning how to knit many times, but chicken out when I think about how daunting it will be to start over learning to knit.

  • 35. Iris Symon  |  June 7th, 2009 at 10:03 am

I have not been able to master crochet. But would love to be able to do so.

  • 36. Carolanne  |  June 7th, 2009 at 12:39 pm

I have always been an avid crocheter. However, I have just recently learned to knit. While I love to do both, I find knitting easier on my wrist(s). There are much more current patterns for knitting as well. However, I am not near as confident a knitter as I am a crocheter, so there are a lot of patterns I cannot do yet. But I really enjoy knitting!

  • 37. Jacqueline Laura Young  |  June 7th, 2009 at 9:43 pm

Actually, I love both and with each day that goes by, I find I am loving and enjoying both more and more. I am seeing techniques I didn’t know existed. I just bought a book called “special techniques & stitches in crochet” which I find I am going to have to find more hours in a day to do and explore; and many knitting techniques are just as new to me. I find it absolutely a marvel just to surf the web because there is so much new going on.

  • 38. Vera  |  June 8th, 2009 at 9:20 am

I like to crochet, I can’t figure out knitting. I have several crochet paterns from the 40’s that are sooo cool. lots of doillies(sp?), (one that is four girls in long dresses holding hands their heads are at the center & the frilly pettycoats are around the outside edge of the doilly). So many different things to make.

  • 39. Margaret  |  June 8th, 2009 at 12:37 pm

I’ve been crocheting since I was 10 or so and love it. I give it up once in a while when I can’t buy yarn or am busy with other things. I quite smoking easily by crocheting and keeping my hands busy. I love doing it all the time now and even have people give me scrap yarn..

  • 40. Gail  |  June 12th, 2009 at 7:23 am

I have been crocheting since I was 7 years old, am now 54. My mother taught me, although she was primarily a knitter. I never could get the knack of knitting, even though I try again and again. I went on to be a much better crocheter than her, but I’m just grateful that she was able to pass on the love of creating with yarn, no matter which craft it is. My life is richer for it.

  • 41. Penny  |  June 17th, 2009 at 1:50 pm

I’ve never been able to learn to crochet and knitting with needles now hurts my hands because of arthritis. I’ve started knitting on a round loom and love it. I’m always looking for patterns for the loom.

  • 42. Darlene  |  June 21st, 2009 at 4:06 pm

I have been Crocheting since i was a young girl and i still love it. I now crochet for my grandchildren and i am only 47…. But i would love to find some patterns for crochet earring ? !.

  • 43. Cheryl S  |  June 27th, 2009 at 3:30 pm

I’ve been crocheting for 40 years now, WOW – has it really been that long. My granny taught me when I was 7. Doesn’t seem that long ago. I’m crocheting a granny square baby sweater right now.

  • 44. Jesse  |  July 22nd, 2009 at 6:14 pm

a crochet openwork pattern is more sexier than knitting, i never want to go back to knitting again…

  • 45. Paula  |  July 24th, 2009 at 10:49 am

I enjoy knitting because it keeps both hands busy at the same Time. I learned how when I was young. I sometimes create myown designs. Like the small christmas stockings I make.

  • 46. Marion  |  September 28th, 2009 at 5:23 pm

I really like to crotchet because it gets results faster. However I prefer to knit as it gives the item being knitted a much softer look so my preference is knitting even if it takes longer for the end results.

  • 47. JJ  |  November 6th, 2009 at 7:33 am

Knitting is great, it doesn’t eat up the yarn as much in crochet, It’s still good to learn both though. Combining them you can create things out of this world…:)

  • 49. Wendy  |  January 19th, 2010 at 4:56 pm

I have been knitting since I was a small child and enjoy the
thrill of fiinishing something lovely. Recently though, I have
tried to learn crochet, but just CAN`T get the hang of it!! They
make it look so easy, but alas, not for me. Maybe I`ll just keep
    trying!

  • 50. Michele  |  April 8th, 2010 at 5:24 am

I can do both, but prefer knitting. I have to disagree with those who say crochet has more intricate stitches, etc.–very advanced knitting patterns with lace (among other things) are as intricate (or more so at times) than any crochet pattern or finished project. I have found that among those I know who crochet (and are experts) that they have said that the knitting patterns are more involved and have expressed envy at them–this includes one person who is so advanced she makes up her own intricate patterns as she goes–like all 4 edges of a baby blanket have a choo-choo train around it in 3-D! I do think that crochet is more easily “portable”, but I have taken my knitting along with me–even on airplanes (love those bamboo needles) with ease. I will sometimes use both on one project–finish an afghan with a crocheted ruffle edge, for instance. They both are fun and produce beautiful pieces and require time, patience and skill. I learned both from my mother as a child and am going on 50 years strong of still making items.

  • 51. maria  |  April 8th, 2010 at 5:58 am

i love to croche and knitting

  • 52. Deb  |  April 8th, 2010 at 6:19 am

I crochet alot and love it but I wish I knew how to follow patterns for knitting. Crocheting is great for blankets and such but knitting looks so much more polished and not so homemade looking than crocheting.

  • 53. Sharon  |  April 8th, 2010 at 6:27 am

I both knit and crochet and it depends on what I am making whether I like one or the other. I make 100 pairs if mittens every year for the kindergartners at the school I once worked at. I also prefer to knit sweaters. But when making curtains, tablecloths, potholders and hats, I prefer to crochet them. Crochet is about three times faster than knitting though.

  • 54. Carole R.  |  April 8th, 2010 at 6:46 am

I love to knit -always have a project going on. I’m about to have my first grandchild, so, of course I’m making baby things right now. However, i’m planning to learn to crochet, too. Everyone tells me that crochetting is easier.

  • 55. Diana Hirsch  |  April 8th, 2010 at 6:51 am

    I prefer knitting to crochet.

    1. Knitting uses about 1/3 less yarn per project (afghans average 2000 yards vs. 3000 yards for crocheted).

    2. Knitting creates a smoother looking fabric.

    3. I may be doing something wrong, but my knit fabrics drape better than my crochet fabrics.

  • 56. Donna  |  April 8th, 2010 at 7:36 am

I have done both for over 45 years. I prefer knitting for some items like socks, hats and scarves. I love crocheting afghans. I find myself knitting more these days but my hooks are never too far away.

  • 57. Ediec  |  April 8th, 2010 at 7:48 am

I know how to knit..I guess you call me an advance beginner. Tried crochet.. I can do the stitches, really like it but finding it hard to follow a pattern.

  • 58. ALICE  |  April 8th, 2010 at 8:05 am

I love crochet and have been teaching it for almost a year at a senior center weekly. I love creating small projects to teach each new stitch. Most popular is the granny square!

  • 59. Janet Vaughan  |  April 8th, 2010 at 8:27 am

I like knitting the best. There is more stretch to it and great for socks, hats, sweaters, mittens – almost anything. Crochet is heavier and does not have the stretch and is great for afghans. It just depends on what you are making. Also, I don’t have the irritated wrist caused by crochet, knitting is easier on the hands. There are so many stitches available for knitting and they are great for challenging the brain! I can knit any pattern without looking for the most part whereas crocheting you have to watch what you are doing all the time. You will gain speed with knitting with the right needles and doing it more.

  • 60. Kim Ward  |  April 8th, 2010 at 8:38 am

I’d have to say I like crocheting better because i get quicker results! I am a slow knitter and not very experienced for that reason. I have a knitting machine but haven’t really done much with it either, although I could get quick results. Maybe I should set it up somewhere and do some knitting!! ;)

  • 61. Jettie  |  April 8th, 2010 at 8:45 am

PLEASE DON’T MAKE ME CHOOSE !!! I like BOTH —-

  • 62. Berta Gilholm  |  April 8th, 2010 at 9:04 am

I have knit for 25 years and crocheted for 61 years. I use to teach when I worked in the local recreation department. Overall including very advanced stitches crochet is more complicated and requires much more concentration. knitting is faster and less confusing, so when in a hurry knit, for a challenge crochet. I prefer the challenge.

  • 63. Karan  |  April 8th, 2010 at 9:22 am

I learned to knit aged 9 and now at age 42 I still knit like that 9 yr old ! I taught myself to crochet a few years ago and haven’t looked back, LOVE it. I still knit sometimes but very slowly and not very well.

  • 64. Jenny  |  April 8th, 2010 at 9:31 am

I only crochet. Being left-handed, it took me many years to find someone who could teach me to crochet – and then it took me several years to learn how to translate many of the patterns for a left-handed person. In many patterns it really doesn’t matter, but as I attempted more and more complicated pieces, I found sometimes I had to rewrite a pattern almost from the beginning.

After all that effort, I’ve never attempted knitting. And I’m so clumsy with my right hand, I have always doubted I’d find the dexterity for two needles.

    But I corchet constantly!!!

  • 65. Jan  |  April 8th, 2010 at 9:32 am

Love them both, couldn’t live without the other. Voted for knitting.
But its not true. With some knitting projects I feel I should be locked
up in a room w/no distractions. My pea brain needs all the help it
can get. Love them the same. Beautiful both.

  • 66. Sue  |  April 8th, 2010 at 10:02 am

I’ve been doing both for over 40 years and I LOVE crochet! It is much more versatile. Knitting is good for large amounts of plain stitches but for lace – give me crochet any time (I use sewing thread). Also crochet is fantastic for free form projects. The real down side of crochet is the lack of patterns and the way LYSs are soooo knit oriented.

  • 67. Joyce  |  April 8th, 2010 at 10:45 am

I’m kind of on the fence on this question. Sometimes it’s easier for me to knit something, but some things are better done as crochet projects. It just depends on what I want to make, and how elaborate I want to get.

  • 68. patsy  |  April 8th, 2010 at 11:30 am

I LOVE TO CROCHET. It’s so much faster and easier. I can make a scarf in a night while I’m watching my favorite programs. It’s really a good craft.

  • 69. Ann Riggs  |  April 8th, 2010 at 11:39 am

Love to do both, but I knit more since it does not make my hands hurt as much.

  • 70. Barb  |  April 8th, 2010 at 11:44 am

I do both but prefer crocheting. I’ve crocheted longer – learned as a child from my mother. First thing we learned to make was edging around handkerchiefs then granny squares. Easier to correct crochet mistakes than knitting – one hook, one stitch

    Prefer kntting for scarfs

  • 71. Luanne Redmond  |  April 8th, 2010 at 11:45 am

I like knitting better because I can knit without looking, which is nice because I take my work on public trans and also work while watching movies and TV. I’ve never been able to crochet without looking to see where the hook goes with every stitch. But it helps to be able to do both, not limiting yourself – you can do more patterns that way.

I sympathize with the left-hander, because I’m a lefty too, but crochet is just as easy for us – it’s the way the patterns are written that’s the problem. Some sort of standardized terminology that does not use right and left would be great. As usual, the problem is not with left-handers, it’s with the rest of the world!

  • 72. Donna Hesson  |  April 8th, 2010 at 11:58 am

I have been crocheting for 35 years. It’s so much easier with one needle to deal with. And there are so many different stitches to pick from. I make everything from baby stuff to scarves and hats to sweaters and afghans. If only I could sell all the stuff I make. Anybody have any suggestions where I can sell my wares? I love doing it so much I am getting a stock pile!!

  • 73. g.m. Powell  |  April 8th, 2010 at 12:06 pm

I like knitting for clothing, it looks more “finished” for sweaters/jackets, however shrugs/shawls looks better crocheted, as do toys and afghans. And knitted items need a crocheted edging. I am glad I know how to do both. They compliment each other.

  • 74. MaryC  |  April 8th, 2010 at 12:10 pm

I can do both, but rarely knit. The crochet stitches are so much prettier and the whole crochet process is much easier and more portable. Knitting seems to go so slow and the stitch counting can be tedious compared to counting crochet stitches. I used to think the cable stitches in knitting were not reproducible in crochet, but I have found some great looking crochet cables on the Internet in recent years.

  • 75. Billie Howd  |  April 8th, 2010 at 12:18 pm

So many prefer crochet, but I think that knitting has a more sophisticated look. I am more concerned with the end result.

  • 76. Barb Ryker  |  April 8th, 2010 at 12:35 pm

I love to crochet and have crochete for a number of years now. I used to knit but can crochet so much faster.

  • 77. Sheri D. Maple  |  April 8th, 2010 at 12:51 pm

I knit and crochet and do not prefer one over the other. It really depends on the project. If like to see it in crochet, then I crochet it, if I like to see it in knit, then I knit it. Then there is always combining the two crafts in one project. I do not know if knitting really takes longer than crocheting because it really depends on the project you are creating. However, I do know that crocheting does take up more yarn, a crochet fabric is not stretchy as a knitted fabric, and crochet provides more options of lace patterns than knit patterns. Both crafts as its pros and cons as most things in life, it is matter of what we want to do.

  • 78. paula  |  April 8th, 2010 at 1:24 pm

I prefer crochet. I just wish there were more patterns for wearables and the like.

  • 79. Sue  |  April 8th, 2010 at 1:36 pm

I think that knitting looks better on clothing, but it is hard. I have crocheted since 1974. I tried knitting lessons a couple of years ago and even in a stress free enviroment, it was nearly impossible. Kudos to you people that can knit.

  • 80. Cat  |  April 8th, 2010 at 1:56 pm

I learned to knit and crochet when I was very young, I have done more crochetting than knitting in the past. But since I was 37 I begun to have carpal tunnel syndrome, knitting si much easier on my wrists, today I only do knitting and like they say practice makes perfect, I now knit faster than I do crochetting. The plus about knitting is that it takes less yarn so I save money, that I like!

  • 81. Lil Mama  |  April 8th, 2010 at 2:50 pm

i looked at both patterns, and its hard to choose; both techniques result in beautiful works of art….. ive never tried either, but would like to try both…if anyone has a link to a website to get my started, i would appreciate!!!!!

  • 82. Nona  |  April 8th, 2010 at 2:55 pm

I like crocheting better because it’s faster and you can create more delicate fancy pieces then knitting.

  • 83. Judy  |  April 8th, 2010 at 3:08 pm

I prefer crochet over knitting. I do both. somedays I want to hear the needles click and turn to knitting.
crochet is way more versitle for patterns, as well as easy to unravel and fix compared to knitting when you have to use a crochet hook to get the stitches back on the needle lol.

  • 84. Sandy  |  April 8th, 2010 at 3:52 pm

I WAS ONLY 10 WHEN MY MOTHER TAUGHT ME TO KNIT AND HAVE DONE KNITTING ALL MY LIFE FOR MY CHILDREN AND GRAND-CHILDREN MY AUNT BETTY TAUGHT ME HOW TO CROCHET A SQUARE, SO THAT IS ALL I CAN REALLY DO WELL. I AM SO SORRY THAT NEITHER OF MY GIRLS PICKED UP EITHER ONE. IT CERTAINLY IS THEIR LOSS.

  • 85. Lyn  |  April 8th, 2010 at 4:27 pm

I have done both for years and usually have simple and complicated patterns on the go at once. If I don’t want to have to concentrate then it is plain knitting I turn to. When my children were little I was able to do plain knitting, read a book, and keep an eye on the TV (not to mention keep an eye on the dinner cooking) all at the same time. Prefer knitting as am able to do alot without having to look at what am working on, also able to drop stitches to correct errors – harder to do with crochet. Find I have to generally watch what I am doing with crochet so not so relaxing.

I have been crocheting for over 50 years and never learned to knit. I will say though, I love the look of knit and am now teaching myself Crochetknit.

  • 87. Kathy Armold  |  April 8th, 2010 at 5:25 pm

I am an accomplished knitter. I can crochet but since I am left handed it
seems more difficult to keep to gauge.
I think people who crochet complete
projects faster. I do not see much difference in the amount of yarn required for knitting verses crochet.

  • 88. Lyn Dicke  |  April 8th, 2010 at 6:20 pm

I am 74 and have been knitting and crocheting since I was about 12. I prefer the speed of crochet and using it for “household” items; I prefer knitting for most clothing items and love the intricate patterns. I honestly cannot say I prefer one over the other; but feel each is special for specific items.

  • 89. Helen  |  April 8th, 2010 at 8:10 pm

I much prefer crochet. Nothing that takes a lot of thought, tho. Am now working on an afhgan for a new baby due in Aug!

  • 90. Julie  |  April 8th, 2010 at 9:48 pm

crochet all the way! I want to know why there isn’t as many crochet mags /books out there as knitting? And I would love to see more clothing out of affordable (like the $3 for a large skein) yarns!

  • 91. Eleanor  |  April 8th, 2010 at 10:48 pm

Crochet is much prettier I think, more different looks compared to knit items. I taught myself to crochet when my boys were toddlers and haven’t stopped since! Am planning on learning to knit just to prove I can! LOL!

  • 92. donna  |  April 9th, 2010 at 1:04 am

I like crocheting better. I love all the different patterns I can make. I even make up my own patterns. I can knit but I don’t like it as well as crocheting.

  • 93. anne  |  April 9th, 2010 at 2:29 am

I knit and crochet and like to have one of each on the go. This way I dont get bored. I have also just taken up miniature knitting which requires a lot more concentration!. I prefer corchet as it grows faster but there’s not such a good choice of patterns. Crochet is also very portable if you are making squares etc and I take this with me on holiday or on my daily commute

  • 94. Joyce  |  April 9th, 2010 at 4:15 am

I think knit looks better.I have tried to knit but can not get it. Crochet is easier for me.

  • 95. wini  |  April 9th, 2010 at 4:19 am

i learned to knit when i was six. usually my knitting ended up with more stitches than i cast on but i kept at it. i learned to crochet and was delighted because it seemed to go faster. although i love crocheting especially making those beautiful bags and doilies, knitting is my passion. i’m glad that crocheters are finally being recognized but i have to say knitting will always be my favorite.

  • 96. Juanita  |  April 9th, 2010 at 4:30 am

I like both,i like to try to use both in my projects.

  • 97. Sharon  |  April 9th, 2010 at 9:26 am

I find knitting more relaxing, because with crochet I have to look where to put my hook for each stitch. However, I find teaching beginning crochet easier than teaching beginning knitting. I’m always asked which is easier: crochet has only one tool and only one live stitch, but there are many stitches to learn. Knitting has only two stitches to learn, but there are two tools and several live stitches. I’ve had a person in a beginning knitting class who said she’d stick with crochet, and a person in the beginning crochet class who stopped after one hour and said she’d stick with knitting.

I love crocheting, for the simple fact that, in knitting, you have two basic stitches;(knit and purl). But in crocheting; you have many different stitches; from single crochet to half-double to treble or triple crochet to double crochet. Many patterns calls for a combination of stitches and variety of hooks. Crochet hooks come in different sizes from the tiny to the large. Now they even have double-ended hooks if you want to use two different colors of yarn on one hook. There are many pattern that require this technique, that I would spend 3 weeks to about to about a month finishing a project, depending on the project.

I teach Crochet and I’ve taught knitters. I’ve never had the desire ti knit. But I can tell you that the knitter’s that have learned to crochet from me have said it’s easier to crochet because it’s more FORGIVING that knitting. But they do still knit periodically. Crochet Hugs

it depends on the mood I like to knit dishclothes. they seam softer, I teach crocheting for 4-H. I love both. It took me years to learn to knit, but I have been crocheting since I was 8 and had to learnto use patterns for 4-H. usually I just take a stitch pattern and go.

  • 101. Cheryl Fleckenstein  |  April 9th, 2010 at 4:25 pm

I prefer knitting, hands down. I crocheted for 20 years before taking up knitting, and now use my crochet hooks mostly to pick up dropped knitting stitches. I occasionally crochet — both only table cloths, doilies, placemats, that type of thing. I love the softer more supple feel to knitted projects.

  • 102. Norma  |  April 9th, 2010 at 5:22 pm

I do both but I am much better at crocheting then knitting, because I have been crocheting a lot longer. I only knit simple things like dishclothes and hats

  • 103. Jennifer  |  April 9th, 2010 at 5:45 pm

I have recently learned how to do both. I like crochet better since I have 4 small children, ages 6 and below, and can stop crocheting immediately and pick it up without worrying about finding where I was. I’d like to keep working at both. They’re both beautiful.

  • 104. Dolly  |  April 9th, 2010 at 8:07 pm

I can do both but I like to knit. I really love to make sweaters. They take forever but when your finish them, they are so worth it.

  • 105. Pam  |  April 10th, 2010 at 7:44 am

I love both crocheting and knitting. I’m afraid, however, than many crocheters who have attempted knitting and are discouraged by the “patience” factor have simply been taught a slow knitting method. American-style knitting IS cumbersome, tedious, and slow. Try using the European-style knitting method, and you”ll find it goes almost as quickly as crochet.

As for my personal preference, I use crochet for speed and knitting for beauty. It’s a tie!

  • 106. thea  |  April 10th, 2010 at 10:22 am

    love love knitting

  • 107. Kathy Gabel  |  April 10th, 2010 at 11:38 am

I prefer crocheting to knitting. My grandmother taught me both but we both came to the conclusion that we preferred crocheting over knitting, In crocheting it is easier to correct a mistake than in knitting. I find crocheting goes faster for me.

  • 108. Patricia Jewell  |  April 11th, 2010 at 1:47 am

I’ve been crocheting for 37 years. I can knit too but don’t like it. Mainly do it to repair vintage items. For those of you looking to learn something different, try fillet crochet or maybe tatting lace. Happy hooking everyone!

  • 109. ben duran  |  April 12th, 2010 at 1:39 pm

I LOVE TO CROCHET, I HAVE SEEN SOME REAL NICE PATTERONS FOR KNITTING BUT WITH CROCHET I AM IN MY OWN LITTLE WORLD . BABY BLANKETS ARE WHAT I LOVE TO MAKE , I ALWAYS HAVE AT LEAST 3 DIFFERENT BLANKETS GOING I GET A PATTERON AND DRESS IT UP WITH RIBBON OR ROSES.

  • 110. Nancy George  |  April 12th, 2010 at 4:51 pm

I have been crocheting since I was 12 (I’m 72 now) and have taught classes for many years. I like doing Tunisian and Tapestry crochet also. I have tried knitting but it is much too slow. I can design and carry out my own designs better in crochet and can make fitting changes much better. I do agree with #14 though.

  • 111. Debbie Loyer  |  April 12th, 2010 at 5:56 pm

I LOVE to crochet. A friend taught me how to crochet almost 20 years ago and I never looked back! I’ve made over 50 afghans that I have given away as wedding gifts, new baby gifts, birthday gifts, retirement gifts and my personal favorite, the just-because gifts. I’ve also had friends and co-workers place orders for their favorite colored afghans. My co-workers know what time I go to lunch and will come to the lunch room just to watch me and see how far I’ve gotten on the current project! Some say they’re grandmother’s made them afghans that they cherish. Others say they don’t know anybody who does that anymore; and still others say what I’m doing is a lost art. AND…I’ve taught some of my co-workers – some in their teens and early 20’s – how to crochet! I’ve created a following and some of the people I’ve taught want me to teach a crochet class at lunchtime! I’ve tried to knit, but being lefthanded, nobody was ever able to teach me, so I just kept crocheting and loving every minute of it!

  • 112. Pamn  |  April 13th, 2010 at 3:58 pm

I prefer crocheting, I tried to knit, however I can’t seem to get into it and there seems to be better patterns for crochet. My twin 11 year old grandsons have ask me to teach them to crochet. Their mom , my daughter, wants me to discourage them. But I don’t see anything wrong with the male population doing something they enjoy. So, I am trying to teach them. You never know, they may crochet something pretty for me. I can dream, can’t I HA!
My house burnt down in 1989 on Christmas day and I lost all my patterns and have been searching for more, but have found them hard to come by. Maybe I’ll find some pretty one soon. Good luck to all who crochet or knit. It is something to enjoy

  • 113. Jessica  |  April 14th, 2010 at 7:56 pm

I do both, but I like Knitting for somethings and Crocheting for others.
    Knitting: Socks, clothes, hats, scarves.
Crocheting: All Plarn projects, afghans, borders and edging, lace, toys.

I have crocheted for 30 years and took up knitting last year. If you have tried knitting and do not get it, check out the continental knitting method. It is much easier because you hold the yarn on the same side as you do for crochet. I have been teaching several of my crocheting friends how to knit and they all love it.

  • 114. ivernamac  |  April 16th, 2010 at 5:29 pm

I like crocheting better than knitting. But I’ve been crocheting for almost 40 years. I know how to do this. My knitting abilities are pretty well spelled out in the garter stitch rag rugs I’ve been making. Strictly utilitarian. But I’d love to be able to knit cables. Comparing the 2 is apples and oranges. They’re different

  • 115. Cindy Z  |  April 17th, 2010 at 2:27 pm

I love to knit. I’ve tried learning how to crochet but just can’t get the hang of it. I have tried to learn how crochet. I am left handed and my tension/stitches were NEVER even.

My mother crochets but is right handed and I just could not get my brain to “grasp” her directions, so I have stuck with just knitting which I taught myself to do. I am 60, have been knitting for yrs but would love to learn to crochet.

  • 116. Regina DeVos  |  April 17th, 2010 at 8:06 pm

I know how to knit and crochet. I like the way knitting looks. I really enjoy knitting more than crochet, but I do occasionally crochet. My last crochet project was a baby blanket in pink and white. It did look really nice. I am now knitting a baby blanket.

  • 117. Priscilla M.  |  April 18th, 2010 at 11:41 am

I started off knitting, then I tried to learn crochet. I couldn’t do it the first time, then I tried a few months later and succeeded. Then I noticed that crochet is a lot more fun than knitting. Crochet can go on for a long time, and knitting can only go as far as he needles go. I’m 13, and I think that crochet is awesome!

  • 118. Priscilla M.  |  April 18th, 2010 at 11:44 am

I love knitting though, they are both fun, I know a lot about knitting and less about crocheting. So I like both. And I can’t leave knitting on the back-burner forever.

  • 119. Trudy  |  May 6th, 2010 at 1:46 am

I learned crochet first so it is easier for me, but I love the look of knitting. So when I have a special project for someone, I will knit it and take my time. But I will admit, crocheting takes me half the time it does for knitting.

  • 120. Peggy Welch  |  May 15th, 2010 at 1:07 pm

I’ve been knitting for over 45 years and have been crocheting for over 30 years. I prefer knitting when it comes to making sweaters. It takes longer than crocheting but I like the way the designs turn out. However, when it comes to making blankets, afghans and baby blankets, I much prefer crocheting. I find crocheting more relaxing because I can just do it and not worry about dropping stitches.
