Update: CPSC Agrees to Exempt some Companies from Product Safety Act

A few weeks back I posted an article about the new Product Safety Act that would require toy manufacturers to submit all their products to costly lead testing procedures. As a result, handmade toy companies have been fearful that they will not be able to survive such a large expense that they also feel is completely unnecessary for their products. The Consumer Product Safety Commission has tentatively agreed to exempt some items from testing. According to the L.A. Times, the exemptions include:

Items with lead parts that a child cannot access
Clothing, toys and other goods made of natural materials such as cotton and wood; and
Electronics that are impossible to make without lead.
