Small and Simple Things

We crafters often find ourselves surrounded by bits of yarn, beads and assorted baubles. Sometimes you just crave a little simplicity in your crafting, a return to the blank slate from which creativity can once flow. For Halloween, I was thinking about simple paper lanterns to line the walkway and stairs to our apartment. Here’s a very simple explanation for how to make Halloween paper lanterns:

Materials

  • Small White Paper Bags
  • Pebbles
  • Electric Tea Lights
  • Pencil
  • Craft Knife
  • Piece of Cardboard

Directions

Trace a jack-o-lantern face or small Halloween shapes onto one side of the bags (ghost, witch, spooky tree, etc.). Try a different theme on five or more bags. Slip a piece of cardboard inside the bag. Use the craft knife to carefully cut out the shapes. Fill the bottom of the bag with a small amount of pebbles. Set the electric tea light in the bottom of the lantern. Watch it glow!

I also stumbled across this wonderful idea from A Spoonful of Sugar. She provides a very simple template for creating these beautiful little boxes out of whatever cardstock you have on hand. Pick up some Halloween paper (orange and black perhaps?), fill with candy corn or other small treats and you have a Halloween gift, classroom treat or party favor.
