Quick Summer Crafts for Tweens

Posted by Kristen on July 22nd, 2009 at 04:07pm

We’ve reached the point in the summer where our weekends are stockpiled with activities and vacations  from now through Labor Day. Still, weekdays are rather mundane and lagging, for the kiddies, that is. Younger ones may have day camp to look forward to, or play-dates and pool parties, but it’s that tween-age kid that might be stuck without a task.

At 11 or 12-years-old, I remember days when the summer got downright boring when the lack of activities showed its ugly face. My mom would yell at us to turn off the TV and go play outside. Into my teenage years, summer break got a bit more interesting with friends to hang out with, preferably those with cars.

However, between those day camp years and the free-flying teen years, many parents may be wondering about things for tweens to do during the summer break. What age is a tween? Generally tweens are between grade school and high school – too old for some things and too young for others.

So here’s a few ideas for quick summer crafts for your tweens, whether they are babysitting the neighborhood kids or having a fun day to themselves. You should never run out of things for tweens to do during the summer break!

1. Get artistic with a Beaded Summer Journal using colorful beads and pieces of fabric you have lying around the house.

2. Create a Summer Fun Scrapbook Page to document all the fun activities your tween participates in this season.

3. If you crochet, try making this super chic Summer Tote to bring to the beach or out to dinner.

4. Challenge yourselves with this Butterfly Dream Bracelet that could be mistaken for professional.

5. Recycle old cans and use them for your next barbecue like these decorative Picnic Helpers.

Being a tween can be a stressful time, so check out a new hobby like crochet or knitting. It’s proven as a stress reliever.
