Happy National Sewing Month!

Here’s today’s post:

I’m a visual learner. I like to look at pictures and watch videos, especially when it comes to developing a new skill. Sewing isn’t always the easiest craft to master and it’s always nice to hear someone’s voice and watch them complete a project instead of merely reading instructions. That’s why I love AllFreeSewing’s YouTube channel!

With over 40 videos available to view, this channel is so informative and exciting. There are basic tutorials (Sewing 101: Hand Sewing Basics) as well as more complicated projects (How to Make a Baby Quilt). There are even helpful videos on topics like cleaning your vintage sewing machine.

My favorite video on the AllFreeSewing YouTube channel is How to Make a Fabric Box. I just moved in to my first apartment and I’m always looking for fun, unique home decor ideas.

Maureen Wilson‘s step-by-step tutorial is so easy to follow. These boxes are great for bedrooms, living rooms or even a college dorm rooms. Store magazines, books and even blankets in your own , homemade storage bins.

Do you find video tutorials helpful for your projects? Why or why not?

  16. Michelle Balvin says:

I find the best way for me to learn is to have face to face instructions. My best friend is a quilt maker and she just helped me with my 1st quilt which turned out beautful. Well now I’m hooked. She is going to help me again with my next one and maybe I’ll be able to do one on my own.

  17. Karen Stephens says:

I am still learning about YouTube channels.
I’m so excited to find AllFreeSewing is on YouTube!
Thanks again for the Free available instruction.
So wonderful in a world where prices are constantly riseing and our incomes aren’t.

  18. Seeing is so much faster. Sometimes, I find it difficult to see what the designer had in mind due to the choice of wording.

  19. Cute boxes!

  20. Videos can be very helpful when written instructions tend to be confusing. Once I see how it is done, the written instructions make so much more sense, and I rarely have to revert back to the video.

  21. Thanks. Free online videos helped me learn knitting and crochet. Hopefully it will help me learn to sew.

  22. Kitten With A Whiplash says:

I learn much better with an example llke these videos.

  23. I love videos, too … so helpful when it’s hard to explain in just words. Love YouTube!

  24. i too am a “visual learner” and i frequently research techniques on youtube! It’s much easier for me to understand oral instructions instead of printed/written instructions.

  25. Risa Culpepper says:

I am very visual, so videos are so helpful to me. They allow me to make fewer mistakes and master the concept faster.

  26. Sometimes a video (visual and sound) is the ONLY way (short of a one-on-one skilled instructor) to wrap your head around a learning task! For those of you who “need” a video helper, don’t overlook video replays that are available for TV broadcsts like the long-running Sewing with Nancy (Zieman) or the old Sewing Connection series with Shirley Adams (sadly gone for about a year now) who was EXTREMELY creative, talented, and effective as an instructor.

  27. I love video tutorials! it usually helps to clarify when you can see it in action. Sometimes when reading the words it feels like its in another language it so confusing!

  28. Sounds like a fun project, and one with oh-so-many possibilities! Thanks for sharing!

  29. Oh my gosh! This is so great. I have inherited my mawmaw’s sewing machine and haven’t touched it yet b/c I was a little scared to clean it, etc. Woo Hoo!! There’s a video for that!! (Just a note, I have cleaned the newer model that a friend has loaned to me.) :)
