I have been sewing since I was 8. Love to do it, it is very therapeutic! Currently working on purses big enough to hold my iPad(I normally like little purses).

  • 2. Lois  |  March 7th, 2011 at 1:12 pm

I love to sew. I learned in Home-Ec when they still had that in schools. I sewed for my kids and now I am sewing for my grandkids. This year I have decided to try my hand at quilting. For new sewers take your time, read the pattern and don’t give up. The first thing may not turn out just right but the more you do it the better you get.

Sewing has been passed down in my family. I learned when I was little, but my teen years had distractions. Then I picked it up again in college, since new clothes were not an option with my limited income. Now I sew things for my niece. She loves the new clothes and toys she gets and I get to practice new techniques.

Just got back into sewing and loving it!

  • 7. Medina  |  March 7th, 2011 at 4:24 pm

I love sewing, but I can’t read patterns. I am a show-me-and-I-can-do-it gal. Makes it hard to sew more than a straight line~lol!

  • 8. karen  |  March 7th, 2011 at 4:25 pm

this is such a good site for looking to do something…i kind of live and breath crafts

  • 9. Beth Ferree  |  March 7th, 2011 at 4:30 pm

I wish I had a serger but I make due with my very basic machine. I think the most important skills are probably mastering button holes and zippers if you’re a new sewer and ruffles, or ruching, for advanced techniques. I’ve been sewing for forty years so I can’t think of anything I need to master at the moment.

  • 10. Tammie Duckworth  |  March 7th, 2011 at 4:30 pm

I have been sewing for 32 years and love it. So far, the most valued skill I have learned is the proper way to use a seam ripper. I was doing it wrong for 20 years and never knew how simple it actually was.

  • 11. Cheryl  |  March 7th, 2011 at 4:31 pm

Love the free patterns and ideas on this site!

  • 12. christy  |  March 7th, 2011 at 4:55 pm

I used to sew a long time ago, was thinking of getting back into it but I often wonder how economical it is (like sewing clothes) when you can buy clothes at some places really cheap.

  • 13. Denise Malbrough  |  March 7th, 2011 at 4:56 pm

I sewed for my daughter when she was a baby, and have just gotten back into it after 18 years! I love to sew, quilt, crochet, and try my hand at several different crafts. Thank you for this site and the chance to win!

  • 16. Diane Standish  |  March 7th, 2011 at 5:14 pm

  • 18. Jeanne Barnes  |  March 7th, 2011 at 5:22 pm

I love to sew. To bad that my teaching sewing classes gets in the way some times. Today I have to finish a pair of pants, that I drafted the pattern, finish 4 Kindle covers and finish a dress pattern that I am drafting so I can get it cut out sewn by next Monday – Oh so much to do! But sewing is the BEST!

  • 19. Toni Brooks  |  March 7th, 2011 at 5:25 pm

Love all the patterns & ideas. Been sewing since I was 9, learned in 4-H over 45 years ago.
Thanks for the chance to win a great prize.

  • 20. Wendy  |  March 7th, 2011 at 5:30 pm

I learned just the basics of sewing from my grandmother when I was very young, now 20 years later I want to get back into this art. I really just want to learn the basics for now and then grow from there!

  • 21. Danielle VonFeldt  |  March 7th, 2011 at 5:31 pm

I’m fairly new to sewing. And this website has helped me sooo much!! Now I’m addicted!
My favorite thing is recycling material from old clothes or items around the house to create new, fresh things.
It saves money on material and really gets your creativity flowing. I’m saving up money now to invest in a new machine. The one I’m using now is over 35 yrs old. But, it’s my baby, so I’m sure I’ll never completely ditch it. :)

  • 22. Judy D  |  March 7th, 2011 at 5:42 pm

My lovely cousin, Linda, taught me how to sew one summer when I was about 10. I’ve never looked back! I sewed for myself, sewed costumes for plays, clothes for my children, and costumes for my kids that had no patterns! Now I just make OR hats for myself and hem uniforms for friends kids!

  • 26. Carol Flynn  |  March 7th, 2011 at 5:52 pm

  • 30. Cathie  |  March 7th, 2011 at 6:19 pm

I love your site!!!!!! the only problem is now toooo many ideas and not enough time

  • 31. Michele Dickey  |  March 7th, 2011 at 6:22 pm

I have just started sewing. I have always wanted to learn but never had a mom or aunt, anyone, teach me how. So I’m figuring it all out online and with books! I can’t imagine all of the things I could have saved soooo much money on if I had just known the basics! If you have a tween or teen, or anyone that would like to know even the basics, sit them down and show them! My 2 sons would really benefit if I were able to have taught them.

  • 32. merri matalon  |  March 7th, 2011 at 6:26 pm

I learned to sew in high school home economics class. I made a pair of purple pants.I have been sewing ever since.

  • 33. Stacey S  |  March 7th, 2011 at 7:08 pm

I do love to sew, but with two little boys, it’s become more difficult to find the time. Now my excuse is to sew diapers so the babe has something cute on his butt!

  • 34. Connie  |  March 7th, 2011 at 7:25 pm

  • 35. Debbie Ebert  |  March 7th, 2011 at 7:47 pm

  • 36. gerry  |  March 7th, 2011 at 7:48 pm

I started sewing doll clothes at 6 or 7.I had to make my own clothes to save money and because I was tall with long legs and arms. I’m now into quilts and clothes for me. I have learned ripping out seams is just unsewing. And my large stash is really a resource. HOORAY!!!

  • 37. Cheri Royalty  |  March 7th, 2011 at 7:51 pm

I love to sew, I have been making clothes, purses, curtains and lots of other things but I have never made a quilt so I think I am gonna try it.

  • 38. Lekia  |  March 7th, 2011 at 7:57 pm

  • 40. Jennifer  |  March 7th, 2011 at 9:03 pm

I’ve been sewing since I was a kid, but I’ve never mastered the art of altering clothes patterns … would love to learn how to do that.

  • 41. Ce53  |  March 7th, 2011 at 9:59 pm

I’d like to learn to sew lycra and similar fabrics.

  • 42. Robie Dodson  |  March 7th, 2011 at 10:30 pm

I have been sewing for 10 years…I think everyone should know how to do buttonholes! I allowed myself to stay intimidated by buttonholes for about 5 years…how crazy because they are sooooo easy, especially with today’s machines!

  • 43. angie koenig  |  March 7th, 2011 at 10:41 pm

    Falling in love with sewing…at 35. :)

  • 44. Jeanna Vaughn  |  March 7th, 2011 at 10:48 pm

I just love this site. Since I was little I have always loved to sew, but never had anyone to teach me. So in the last few years I have been trying to teach myself. Not doing to good but this site is the best I have found. I only have a small machine but perfect for learning to sew. Thanks for the chance to win a new machine! I have recommended this site to all my friends and family.

  • 45. Debra Walker  |  March 7th, 2011 at 11:07 pm

I started sewing when I was 15 years old. I sewed everthing for my daughter and son when they were little. I gradually got away from sewing after the grew up. I now have beautiful little baby grandaughters and would love to start sewing again for them. But I no longer have my sewing machine and cannot afford to buy one right now. It would be such a blessing if I could win the Bernina.

  • 46. Evelene Sterling  |  March 8th, 2011 at 4:59 am

I am with Jennifer, I too have never mastered the art of altering patterns.

  • 47. Brenda Harris  |  March 8th, 2011 at 6:49 am

I learned to sew as a child. We had sewing class in my Junior High curriculum and my mother taught me. I am nervous about putting in zippers now and my Singer buttonhole maker just WILL NOT work. I even had my mother — a Home Economics teacher work with it and she said it would not work. I need to gain comfort with zippers and figure out HOW to make a button hole! I want to enjoy sewing more.

  • 48. Terry Rogers  |  March 8th, 2011 at 8:01 am

My mother taught me to sew when I was small, Ive made clothes for my children when they were growing up, now I have four granddaughters, two are interested in sewing. We find great patterns on your web site for them.Free patterns save us money… thank you so much

  • 49. Mary  |  March 8th, 2011 at 8:48 am

I have always been fascinated with sewing and over the years have developed my talent for this. My next goal is to learn to make my own patterns!

  • 50. Carole Rice  |  March 8th, 2011 at 9:19 am

I began sewing in junior high in the mid ’50s and have continued throughout my life…sewing offers a creative outlet and inexpensive clothing and home furnhishings.

  • 51. Deb  |  March 8th, 2011 at 9:39 am

The most important skill a sewer can have is patience.
Patience to “double check” measurements before one cuts squares for a quilt block. Patience to “recheck the pattern piece placement” before sewing a sleeve into a garment.
And most importantly, patience with oneself…if you take on a sewing project with a relaxed attitude, you will have a good experience with less ripping out and less stress.

  • 52. Cindy huntington  |  March 8th, 2011 at 10:40 am

I love sewing… I can be as creative as i want or just follow along a pattern. I am making raggedy Ann’s and aprons and LOVIN it !!

  • 53. Frances  |  March 8th, 2011 at 11:32 am

My husband bought me my 1st sewing machine last year and it’s only recently that I even learned how to thread the thing properly by myself, so all of these tutorials will be much appreciated. Thank you for doing the leg work to find and post the links to them.

  • 54. Sheila Brady  |  March 8th, 2011 at 11:37 am

I love to sew, but just don’t have the time anymore. I hope to make some items for my 3 yr old granddaughter from the same patterns I made her mother’s clothes about 25 years ago.

  • 55. PAT S  |  March 8th, 2011 at 11:41 am

  • 59. patsy  |  March 8th, 2011 at 1:15 pm

Took sewing in my junior high days & all thru high school & glad I did.
I think reading your owners manual is a must to operate the machines.
And get a good sewing book or peruse tutorials to familiarize yourself with techniques.
Start simple & practice makes perfect as they say.

  • 60. Rebecca  |  March 8th, 2011 at 1:18 pm

I am a sewing novice, so far I’ve only done repairs and hems. I recently bought the book Sewing Basics With Pullout Patterns and plan on following their step-by-step instructions so I can learn the basics and master different techniques.

  • 61. Marge  |  March 8th, 2011 at 1:24 pm

I enjoy a wide variety of crafts and for the most part have taught myself. I have several things that I still aim to try before I die, for example I would like to learn how to bead.

  • 62. debi  |  March 8th, 2011 at 1:30 pm

Haven’t sewn (other than repairs) in years. Still use the 36 year old Singer I received in high school. Seeing what the new machine can do, would love to get back into this craft/art.

  • 63. Lisa Mcgrath  |  March 8th, 2011 at 1:45 pm

  • 65. Kathryn Paulson  |  March 8th, 2011 at 2:00 pm

Crafting in all areas has been a comfort to me since my surgery. Not only the projects but the many people I have talked with. And I’ve learned A LOT. Thank you

  • 66. Barb Hutchins  |  March 8th, 2011 at 2:26 pm

I have a treadle machine plus a feather weight Singer that sits in the slot of the accompanying sewing table. I still use the treadle for heavier fabrics (or as a TV table). I figure the only thing that can break with a treadle is your leg and then you wouldn’t feel much like sewing anyway.

  • 67. Kathy D  |  March 8th, 2011 at 2:30 pm

Love this blog! Very helpful sewing tips.

  • 68. Jennifer Tavernier  |  March 8th, 2011 at 2:58 pm

I think more, I absorbed sewing (machine) from my mom when I was a kid – and actually got my first hands on at a brownie/GS thing -(I skipped home ec – took sci and music instead! LOL!) costuming was my thing! I sewed for choirs and theatre groups. I Love sewing!! – then clothes, but I am more comfortable designing, although patterns work too!
However, the one thing that I am still hesitant of are all the presser feet (gazillons!) I still do buttons by hand!
I know all it would take is sitting down and doing it! Now I have a brand new brother, computerized (my first) – and methodically plan to go through youtube vids and all the presser feet one by one – until I have mastered them all! There is something about the old metal machines though – (maybe because they were workhorses and pretty simple – you could fix them yourself!) and oil them!
Right now it and I eye each other – until spring cleaning is done -

  • 69. Pam Lusk  |  March 8th, 2011 at 2:59 pm

I would love the craft basket!

    National Craft Month 2011

I was born into crafting. My mother was always busy making something from Barbie doll clothes to resin grapes. I have faithfully followed in her steps. I make jewelry, I sew make cards and do scrapbooking. I’ve also made dolls, taken ceramic classes and done paper mache. If it looks like fun I’m all for trying it out.

  • 71. Jaclyn  |  March 8th, 2011 at 3:43 pm

I wish I knew how to sew. My Nana was going to teach me, but she passed away last year. I have still tried to make attempts at learning, I can do basics like repairing clothes/reattaching buttons, but that is about it.

I starting sewing in my Home-Ec class in 7th grade. We made pillows, using fake fur. Mine was a pretty peach color. The next year, I made a kitty-cat pillow. My daughter made an octopus pillow in her 7th grade Home-Ec class. It is “sew” cute!

Thanks so much for the information you provide for sewing projects

  • 77. Kathy  |  March 8th, 2011 at 5:00 pm

I’ve been crocheting since I was about 6 or 7. My Nana taught me all the basics, and tried to teach me to knit and sew as well. I never picked it up when I was younger. My Nana passed away almost 20 years ago. Since then I’ve taught myself to knit, and am in the process of learning to sew. It’s my way of keeping her alive in my heart.

  • 86. Diane Mettam  |  March 8th, 2011 at 7:55 pm

I’ve been sewing for 50 years. My first “real” project, where I went to a fabric store and actually purchased fabric and a patter, was a dress for my Barbie. Before that I sewed with fabric from the rag box. I’ve sewn wedding gowns, sport coats, jeans, slipcovers, baby clothes, and everything in between. I love to sew, and quilt, as well as embroider, knit and crochet. Now that I’m on disability leave from the church, the needle arts keep me sane!

  • 87. Debbie Kennedy  |  March 8th, 2011 at 8:22 pm

I don’t know what I’d do without you guys – I’ve been trying to sew for years. Well, off and on. I could never really pick it up – but then began reading articles on here. What a difference! I’m no longer afraid I will make clothes for my kids that really only fit as-of-yet unidentified animals!

It’s the fabrics that I love–especially the cute Japanese prints. I just need to actually sew them up instead of admiring them in my craft closet.

When I was 12, someone helped me make a quilt for my newest (and youngest) sibling. I’ve also done some stuff by hand, but I wish my stitches were more even…

I have been sewing for years yet wish I could master sewing knits…I know that sounds crazy, yet my tension is never set correctly when I sew knits so now I stray away from them. I think for a beginner it is best to learn all of the basic’s, just like in swimming and the over time you master the ones you feel at ease with, this way of teaching vs. teaching any old thing in a sporatic fashion would prevent my situation with knits.
    Thanks!
    Darby

Thank you for the sewing tutorials. I know the basics, but would love to learn so much more.

Just learning to sew – thanks for making the basics easily accessible.

  • 108. Alesha  |  March 10th, 2011 at 6:35 pm

I just started sewing a few months ago. My first craft was crochet. Sewing works up a bit faster than crochet and I like it! :)

I think it’s important to know how to a basic neat hem. You have to use it almost always and I love a neat hem! Also, ruffling. I sew mostly for my daughters and the ruffler is my favorite!

In home ec I tried ti make a pair of corduroy pants, the back and front were different shades. That’s when I learned about napping.

  • 113. Dena  |  March 12th, 2011 at 11:31 am

I learned to sew at about 5 years old but since the children are gone I only quilt a little. The videos taught me many things that I might have known once but now I know that I know them

I’m a beginner but I’d really like to learn how to use an overlocker. I think that for many projects I have in mind it would be a ton faster :) I have one handy just need to spend the time to learn to use it! (But I get seduced away by the embellisher…so much fun, so little knowledge needed! :) )

How to sew a straight line and not jam the bobbin. Maybe I need a lesson in sewing machine maintenance.

  • 117. parise  |  March 13th, 2011 at 10:23 pm

I have sort of taught myself how to sew over the past few so there are a lot of things that I still need to and want to learn but on of them is how to sew with delicate fabrics…I find them so frustrating to work with because they slip and slide everywhere before you even get to cut them

I love to sew. I got my first sewing machine when I was 4. It was a tiny Singer with the carry case. I used it to make clothes for my dolls. I got my first “big girl” machine when I was 12. I have been sewing ever since.

  • 119. Joan Marie Sheldon  |  March 15th, 2011 at 4:45 pm

My mom was my inspiration. She use to make matching dresses for my sister and me. She also made her dress match ours. I started at the age of eight. I made pillows and blankets for my dolls. Still love to sew. I have the itch to stitch all the time. Doesn’t matter if its a machine, needles or hooks it is very satisfying to make a project turn out and regardless of who’s pattern it is easy to make it your way.

I learned to sew from my mother (her mother taught her) when I was young. I even took sewing in Home Ec. in junior high school (although I hated our main project). I have sewed on and off throughout the years and want to start doing more. I feel I am still a beginner. I would love to feel really comfortable sitting down to the machine without second thoughts and getting projects done quickly and easily.

I guess learning how to make alterations would be a useful skill whether you have children or not. :-D

  • 122. Peggy Quinones  |  March 18th, 2011 at 7:15 am

I’ve been sewing almost since birth. I’d rather sew than eat: I’ve missed dinner sinny, minny times. Hate the computerized machines. The ELNA SU was the best machine I ever had. It was one of the last mechanical zig-zaggers and It needs repair now. ANybody know who can do it right the first time for less than the mortgage?

  • 123. Elizabeth  |  March 22nd, 2011 at 5:32 am

I’d love to learn the basic’s of sewing with a machine and then go from there.

  • 124. Joan Marie Sheldon  |  March 22nd, 2011 at 9:12 pm

I love sewing. And the best part was sharing my know how with my daughters. Your site is so full of great things I know they will enjoy it to.

  • 125. Jennivie  |  March 23rd, 2011 at 10:23 am

I’m just starting out so I have no idea what skills I even have to look forward to wishing I could master.

  • 126. Meredith  |  March 24th, 2011 at 12:23 pm

I have been sewing since I was 5. I am 13 now. I think it is very important to be able to use a sewing machine no matter what you’re sewing, such as around curves, straight lines, etc.

  • 127. Cindy B  |  March 28th, 2011 at 7:35 pm

I have loved to sew for as long as I can remember… Now that I am an adult and a bag/ purse junkie, I can combine two of my loves. Yay!

  • 128. Susan D'Alesandro Wilder  |  March 31st, 2011 at 1:39 pm

I love to sew but haven’t done so for years. In 8th grade I learned it in school and would come home every night and make a blazer or bust out shirt. Love those days!!

This post seems to be great for beginners or those just simply refreshing on techniques. Thank you for sharing the links.

  • 130. Diane  |  September 1st, 2011 at 8:52 am

My Grandmother taught me to sew, then of course I took “home ec” in school. Still love to learn new techniques.

Love, love, LOVE to sew ~ Learned @ the age of 10 ~ 44 yrs ago ( did I say that out loud ) It’s definately a Good Thing to Know!!!
It doesn’t matter what skill level you are ~ practice does make perfect – the bonus – somethimes you develope a ‘new’ way to do something that’s older than time itself!!
