How To: Preschool Christmas Crafts

Preschool Christmas crafts can be hard to find. Regular kids’ crafts are often too difficult for the 3 to 5-year-olds, but you still want the young ones to participate in crafting for the holidays. Little ones especially want their own stamp on the holiday decorations around your house. They gain a feeling of true accomplishment. Preschool age can also be the most fun because they are genuinely excited about creating something of their own for the special occasion.

A good way to implement Christmas crafts with preschool children is to make them educational. They may not have the fine motor skills to make intricate crafts, but they definitely have the capacity to learn basic papercrafts and coloring activities. Focus on learning the alphabet while making different crafts associated with a particular letter. In the weeks leading up to Christmas, pick a letter from the alphabet and make crafts that start with that letter. When you start the craft, make sure to spend some time talking about the letter, the sound it makes and the words it forms. Do the same for every week’s letter focus.

Here’s a few ideas:

C – Christmas Tree, Candy Cane, Cookies

H – Holly, Hat

R – Reindeer

I – Icicle

S – Snowman, Snowflake

T – Toys

M – Mittens, Moose

A – Apple Pie,

S – Santa, Stocking

Several fun Christmas words start with the letters “C” and  “S” – so you may want to start here. Get the kids into the Christmas spirit with construction paper Santa hats and paper or doily Snowflakes that you can put on the windows for decoration. For the letter C, spend some time making paper candy canes and baking cookies as a family.

When you get to the letter G, here’s a super simple Christmas craft to make with your preschooler:

Paperchain Christmas Garland

Materials:

• Construction paper (all colors)
• Scissors
• Glue or Tape

Steps:

1. Cut strips of construction paper, width-wise, about an inch thick.
2. With the first strip, pull ends together and glue in place so that it makes a loop.
3. Loop the next strip through the first loop, creating a chain effect.
4. Continue with this method until you have a long chain of multi-colored construction paper
5. String it around the Christmas tree or up the banister of your staircase.

This craft is so easy and your preschoolers will love having their work displayed on the Christmas tree. So take the educational route and teach your kids about the Christmas words while you craft this year.
