Help a Reader: Trouble with Ripple Afghans

One of our readers is having trouble with ripple afghans. Connie writes,
I love the ripple afghan, but I always have extra sts at the both ends. The sts in between are fine, but the turning chains are my problem. I started a ripple afghan the other day and I had several rows on it when I realize I had extra sts on both ends.
I responded with my general rule of thumb for crochet turning chains (1 for sc, 2 for hdc, 3 for dc) hoping that would help, but Connie responded that’s not the problem. She wrote,
I have crocheted for many yrs, but every time I try a ripple afghan I always end up with to many sts on the ends. I follow the instructions start with say 6 dc, then the point, then 6 dc, then skip 2 sts and begin again, I always have extra sts on either end when I turn my work.
Can you help? Do you know what might be the problem? I actually just started a ripple afghan myself so I would certainly be interested in hear what our crochet experts think. Please post your answers below or try out our new discussion board.

I had the same trouble when I first tried the ripple stitch. I was so frustrated that my afghan was growing on the ends! My Grandmas ended up ripping it out and redoing it for me. She taught me that you’ve got to count those stitches on each end every time.

Lyn is right you do have to count every time you turn to come up with the correct stitches, when you turn and you have the chains at the very end, you have to skip one stitch between the chains and the next stitch so you are actually starting on the third stitch or second from your chains (ch skip next stich then start your dbl crochet), now remenber to always count your first chains as your first stitch so you will go chains as fist then go to your second, third, etc.. until you go to your increase of 3 stitches in one.

Always,count count count stitches between skip 2(valley)and 3-in-1(peak). Incr. or decr. immediately as needed. Row ends are the most common place to need this, usually by one stitch. Be sure extra incr/decr stitches do NOT fall in the same vertical line as the previous row. This alters the ripple and the width of the piece.
