Help a Reader: Knitting Afghans for Organ Recipients

Posted by Caley on October 14th, 2009 at 03:03pm

We had a very touching email from a woman asking for help with an afghan knitting pattern as part of a fundraising effort for the Jacksonville Heart Lung Transplant Support Group. She writes,

I need help making a knitting pattern for an afghan. I am a member of the Jacksonville Heart Lung Transplant Support Group and I want to make these afghans for a fundraiser project to help the transplant people waiting and those who have received their transplants to help them in their needs as most of them are not from the area and they have to move here and stay here 3 months after they receive their organ transplants. Would you be so kind and guide me to someone who can help me?

If you would like to help, please contact us and we’ll forward along this woman’s email address.Ā  Thank you!

If you are asking if we can help make an afghan, I can knit. I’ll need the pattern that you are doing though and to know what kind of yarn you will be using. Let me know.

I received a heart transplant in July 2008, and think this is a great idea. I’m also love to knit. If you log into lionbrand.com you can find numerous afghan patterns to download. I have a pattern that I made that knitts quicly on #17 needles using to stands of a worsted weight yarn.

    Cast on 98 sts:
    Rows 1-10: Kint across
    Rpws 11-27: K4, *K15, P15*, repeat from * to * across, ending by knitting last 4 sts.
Rows 28-45: reverse pattern from rows 11-27. K4, *P15, K15*, across thne end by knitting last 4 sts.
Repeat rows 11-27 and 28-45 until there are 8 squares lengthwise.
End by kntting the last 10 rows ( as in rows 1-10). Bind off and weave in the ends.

Size is approx. 55″ x 48″. Due to the number of stitches a circular needle works well. Yarn is worsted weight, use 2 strands throughout. Uses approx. 1,800 yds of yarn, I usually by 3 of the “Pounder” size yarns.

If you want to make a smaller size decrease the number of cast-on sts accordingly. Happy Kntting !

It’s not clear to me what you want; one of the other comments indicated similar confusion. There are numerous free patterns listed on favecrafts.com as well as linobrandyarn.com; googling, “free knitting patterns”, “free afghan patterns”, etc. will yield similar numerous results. I would be more than happy to knit an afghan for you. Perhaps you are looking for monetary donations to defray the cost of the project? Perhaps local church
and synagogue groups would be interested in getting involved by knitting or contributing money? Good luck; let us know how you make out!

I wound be glad to help if you can tell us what size, pattern and so forth you need help with.

If you are looking for someone to help make these afghans, I’ll volunteer to make a few crocheted afghans for your group too if you let me know where to send them, what size you need and if they have to be a special color.

I knit caps for cancer and kemo patients also.

    Hugs Robbie
