Help A Reader: Cluster Afghans and Thrift Store Treasures

PinExt Help A Reader: Cluster Afghans and Thrift Store Treasures

It’s time to help each other out!  This week’s Help a Reader post features questions about lost directions for a no-knitting machine and a pineapple tablecloth pattern.  Can you help?  If you feel you can help or have any suggestions, please post your answer in the comments. Please try to supply instructions and/or links. Have fun! =)

Lue Heacock asks,

I am trying to find a 60″ round, pineapple design tablecloth. I was wondering if you knew of anyone that had that pattern?

Vivian asks,

I am having trouble trying to make the cluster in an afghan pattern. In the pattern it says yarn over hook draw up a loop.  How do you do this?  It goes on, yarn over hook and draw through 2 loops on hook 3 times. Can you help me by giving me a picture of this stitch?

Debbie asks,

Hopeful someone may have heard or know about this.  It is called Heir-loom a 2″ square loom with retractable pegs- refered to as no knitting no crocheting.  Made by Hallmark Homecraft Somerville, Massachusetts 1971.  Apparently there also were books made with patterns. Found this at a thrift store and want to try it but have no directions.  Thank you for your help.

  1. Vivian it’s like doing a double crochet halfway and leaving the last loop on your hook, three times in the same stitch, then yarn over and pull through all your remaining loops to complete the cluster. Have you checked out YouTube? There are so many helpful videos that demonstrate this and other crochet stitches. I highly recommend crochet videos by tjw1963 as she makes excellent demonstrations for beginners bu going slow and often using slow motion.

  2. Dorothy Staedt says:

    I have a pattern for 60 inch tablecloth,pineapple design .

  3. Both the Pineapple Table cloth and the instructions for cluster type stitches (pop corn/ shells) can be found on http://www.crochetpatterncentral.com. They have extensive free instructional and pattern directory. for cluster look under crochet stitches on main page, for patterns click on directory and have fun!

  4. Small knit wit loom help. Here’s a link of small loom info. go down the pictures, I think you will find info on the square loom here http://www.knitting-and.com/small-looms/loomsandyarns.htm

  5. This site sells various sizes of pegged looms they call Weaving Boards. It sounds like what you found at the thrift store and they have free instructions, too.
    Another site I discovered is:
    http://eloomanator.eloomanation.com/
It has several other project ideas to make with the small woven squares. Now you have me interested and on the hunt for something like this next time I go thrifting! Hope this is what you were looking for.

  6. Lori Johnson says:

For Debbie, I think you mean HAIRPIN loom. Google it or check out one of the multitude of videos at youtube. This one looks good http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=acZgWT0Nh58&feature=related

  7. Debbie,
I found some instructions when I put “daisy loom” into the browser. This is what I came up with (this one had the most instructions, as well as a brief history)
    http://www.knitting-and.com/small-looms/loomsandyarns.htm

  8. Go on line and enter Heir-Loom in the search box or enter the company name, you may even be able to get a book on line and copy it.

  9. this pages has pictures of the looms and may also have some project instructions:

    http://www.knitting-and.com/small-looms/loomsandyarns.htm

    It says on the website:
“For over 50 tutorials and projects using flower looms, visit
    http://www.knitting-and.com/small-looms/index.html

    Hope this helps!

  10. For Lue – I don’t know if any of these are close enough to what you want, but . . .

craftown.com has 3 pineapple tablecloth patterns:

    75″ diameter – http://www.craftown.com/crochet/pat3.htm

    73″ diameter – http://www.craftown.com/tablecloths/tcloth2.htm

    no diameter given – http://www.craftown.com/crochet/pat33.htm

    also, 43″ diameter pattern:
    http://www.momsloveofcrochet.com/RoundPineappleTablecloth.html

. . . and while it was not useful in my search today, a little plug for my current FAVORITE pattern site:
    http://www.antiquepatternlibrary.org/completelist.htm

  11. Go to http://www.craftown.com/crochet/pat3.htm and that’s a pattern for the round pineapple design tablecloth.

  12. Roberta Wood says:

I have a book dating from 1972 that has a pattern for a 75″ round pineapple tablecloth. Since it begins in the center, you could probably crochet it out and end it where you want it.

  13. Dear Vivian, the only cluster i can help you with might be what you are trying to do is.
make your chain then yarn over hook, put hook into chain yarn over hook, pull through you have three loops on hook.yarn over hook pull through two loops only, you have two loops left on hook.yarn over hook put hook through same place in chain yarn over hook pull through yarn over hook pull through two loops yarn over again pull through all three loops.
    hope this is helpful

  14. Lue,
Don’t know if you’ve already found what you are looking for but you might try Jamestown Settlement if you haven’t. I used to work in the store there, since the pineapple is the symbol of Colonial Williamsburg we carried everything pineapple, including tablecloths, embroidery patterns and sewing patterns. You might try their history site, they often have patterns and instructions on period designs posted for free.

  15. I made one of these about 8 years ago. Got the kit from either Herschner’s, Annie’s Attic or Mary Maxim. Don’t recall if I saved the pattern, and I’m going through 30 years of paperwork still. If you can’t find it at the above three places, send me an email at and I’ll go rummaging for it. Hope it’s not urgent.

  16. Lynn Martin says:

Debbie, is this the loom you have? http://www.onlineauction.com/index.php?page=auction:view_item&auction_id=551407

The seller’s copy indicates that it is very similar to the Knit-Wit tool, instructions for which can be found here: http://www.plaidonline.com/articleDetail.asp?articleID=315

    and here:
    http://www.ehow.com/way_5808804_knitwit-flower-instructions.html

    I hope this helps.

  17. Lue:

Try the Ravelry website. I have found many round tablecloths and some of them are free downloads.

    Good Luck!
