Favorites Friday: Bags

Posted by Caley on January 16th, 2009 at 09:15am

Though I am not a huge fan of handbags or purses, I do appreciate the necessity of a good bag. Ideally, we crafters would make one.  But with time and skill restraints, buying handmade from independent sellers is even better. For this Friday, we decided to do a round-up of our favorite bags, both projects to make yourself and some to purchase. Enjoy!

Caley’s Picks:

  1. Kathy at Pink Chalk Studio posted the result of using Amy Butler’s Birdie Sling pattern. You can purchase the pattern online and Kathy shares an extensive list of tips for making this bag. And her cheerful fabric choices help fight the winter blues!

  2. I wish that I had learned to sew as a child with the help of Mia Binns’ sewing tutorials for children. Lesson 3 at One Hour Craft shows you how to teach a child to sew with this cute little handbag.

  3. Mari’s Japanese Monk Bag at the purl bee looks super-comfortable and not too difficult to sew together.

  4. The quilted patchwork purse from creative little daisy is perhaps the perfect way to use up scraps from a bigger quilting project.

Kelly’s Pick:

  1. As usual, I’m dreaming of summer time and that makes me totally want this amazing duffel bag made from recycled sailboat sails in Portland, OR. Recycling never looked so good!

Mindy’s Picks:

  1. This fun bag from Chicago based Carry Handbags is handsewn from a vintage Jack Daniel’s t-shirt.All of Carry’s handbags use vintage or recycled materials and you can find them here. (Kathy from Merriment, who makes awesome Chicago crafts, makes up 1/2 of the Carry Team.)

  2. I like the colorful, yet simplistic bags from Kirsten James Handbags. Many of her bags are diaper bags, but who says you have to have a baby to carry one?

  3. You knew I was going to have to include a food-themed bag. Don’t act surprised. Next time you are ordering take-out, you won’t have to ask, “Which one is ebi again?” You can just look at your bag!
