Craft Trends: Wood and Metal

This art book was created at a Metal Craft Discovery Workshop by Linda and Opie O’Brien.

Various interior design experts say more homeowners want to include wood and metal in their home décor. I found that insight interesting since we just invested beautiful wood flooring in several rooms of our home. The wood flooring makes the rooms warm and inviting. You can add wood to your home by using wood bowls, wood frames for your wall art, or placing twigs in floral arrangements.

Wood bowls are excellent for showing off collections.

Wood and metal is also emerging as a focal interest in jewelry. Artists are combining the two materials with both high shine and matte finishes. Wood beads are making a comeback both in natural tones and painted. Metal has always been popular in jewelry making with silver and gold the top choices, but look for pewter and bronze to make a statement in pendants and beads.

There are so many ways to manipulate metal from sculpture to soldiering to cutting to texturing. This piece combines several techniques.

Wood and metal can be powerful when used separately and even more powerful when intermingled. Give it a try!
